Pick Up A Stick is an initiative that aims to provide an opportunity to individuals to try hockey for the first time or to get back into the sport in a fun and friendly environment.
If your club would like to reach out to the community and invite non-hockey players into the club, this initiative could be a good fit.
The benefits of running a Pick Up a Stick initiative within your club are two fold. It could lead to increased members within the club. It could also provide a basic understanding of the sport to those considering volunteering with the club as a underage coach or a committee member.
Running a Pick Up A Stick programme within your club may take the form of a five or six week programme aimed at a particular cohort of individuals. The programme can be mixed or run for females or males only. Regional blitz’s will be arranged for Pick Up A Stick clubs to give those involved in the programme an opportunity to play fun non competitive matches.
This initiative is also open to community groups / LSPs / Local Authorities.
Clubs participating in the Pick Up A Stick programme will receive the following supports:
Pick Up A Stick Pack containing coaching plans for sessions
- A €200 bursary to help support the running of the programme. This could be used to contribute toward pitch hire or coaching fees, equipment or even simply to support a BBQ at the end of the six weeks for all participants.
- Equipment
- Subsidised coaching / umpiring courses for clubs taking part
- Support from Development Officer team
