NDS Women
National Development Squad and U21 Squad January 2020
Background:
The National Development Squad has been introduced as part of the HookedforLife review and aims to help address the gap created by recent developments in the game which has seen athletes reaching senior level at an older age. The introduction of the squad allows athletes to continue development after the U21 age group for two further years and they will compete in matches at U23 level. This is line with several other top nations. Selection is based on an athlete’s potential to play at senior level within 4 years. Players will be supported in 2-3 Strength and Conditioning sessions per week with mid-week regional sessions starting in March at Abbotstown. The U21 Squad provides a longer term, development opportunities for players aged 18-20 and it is expected that some players will move into the Development Squad from here once they have been assessed within match play.
Quote from David Passmore:
“This development is an important one for the women’s game in Ireland and will allow us to develop a number of players who have been in the U21 program further with a view to them reaching the senior squad after the Tokyo cycle. A number of the group are currently training with the seniors which allows them to understand the intensity of training required. The program has been carefully planned with Sean Dancer who has taken a great interest in the up and coming talent since his arrival last May”
“The group of younger players that have move up from U18s, along with some players who have developed while at college in England means the group has a good mix and we enjoyed a great training camp at Abbotstown last week. Our aim will be to have a crop of talented players vying for senior squad places once the Tokyo cycle is over”

Following Wednesday’s final preparation match against Belgium in the squad has been decided, Head Coach Passmore commented that “the whole Junior Green Army have worked hard over the past ten months to best place themselves for this tournament and the fitness levels are very high within the group. This will help in the intense heat of Valencia. Managing a group with such a diverse background has its challenges and we still haven’t played together with full availability due to exams, placement and injuries. That said we have a good balance to the group with the ability to vary how we play. The final selection calls were the hardest I have ever made.”
Match Schedule:
Ireland are in a 5 team Pool A and play their matches as follows:
Sat 13 July 17:45 v Russia
Mon 15 Jul 20:00 v Netherlands
Weds 17 July 20:00 v Spain
Thurs 18 July 20:00 v France
Sat 9 July and Sunday 20 July Cross over matches
Commenting on the pool Passmore added “there will be no easy matches in this pool. Obviously Netherlands will be the clear favourites although I have been very impressed with the quality of the Spanish team in recent matches. France have 15 of the team who were so competitive in the Banbridge World Series and eight of the Russian team played for their senior team in Hiroshima where they were unlucky not to make the final losing to Japan on a shoot-out. That said, if we can fine tune our finishing we can match any team on our day”

“we are delighted to have such a high quality tournament at this stage of our preparation and to have the additional matches against Canada and India will provide the players some great developmental opportunities and to experience different playing styles. This event is only possible due to the ongoing support of our sponsor Eugene F Collins, the generous support of our donors and fantastic parents’ group”. David Passmore, Head Coach
——————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————
It is sure to be busy year for the U21 Women as they set their sights on the Junior European Championships in Valencia (July 2019), an important qualification route for the Junior World Cup. Ahead of that tournament they will prepare via vital matches against Spain, England and Belgium. Speaking about the panel, head coach David Passmore said “This is a strong group of talented athletes and represents the fact that there has now been a ongoing program in place for the past two years and given we had twelve of the group included to the tournament in 2017. That said we have some young faces that have pushed their way through from the past two U18 squads. Most of the girls attend twice weekly morning gym sessions and regional technical sessions around their busy club commitments as a way of closing the gap between ourselves and the big four, and results over the summer with the U23’s and against England in Belfast in August show we are beginning to make progress”

U21 Women’s Squad selected to play USA
U21 Women’s Head Coach David Passmore has selected a large squad to play against America in three matches to be hosted by St Gerard’s School in Bray later this month. Passmore has opted for a large squad given the placement in the domestic calendar with the fixture congestion caused by the number of postponements due to the weather. Passmore noted “it is great that the America squad have chosen Ireland to visit at this time as it will allow us to assess a large number of players over the three matches. We are delighted that St Gerard’s have agreed to host these matches at their excellent facilities and we thank them for that”.
The squad sees a number of new faces to the international scene including Jenny Clein and Hannah Humphries from UCC. Other young additions include Emma Young who has impressed during her first season at UCD and top sprinter Niamh Gowing who has been in form this year for Mount Anville School. Commenting on the selection Passmore commented that “I have watched a number of Inter-varsity, school and club matches and also taken on board suggestions from the coaches themselves and we are still assessing a number of players. We have included the likes of Rebecca Mercer from Belfast Harlequins who we did not get the opportunity to see before and who has impressed with her club. It is important that the door remains open for all players and we have included over 40 athletes during our early training sessions this year”.
The three match series starts on Sunday 25th March with further matches on Tuesday 27th and Wednesday 28th with Passmore expected to rotate the squad. “It is great to play against the States who will unquestionably bring a fit and athletic squad that will test our young players. It is only through these types of series that players can really be viewed from an international perspective to see if the can cope with the speed of the game both physically and in their ability to make good decisions under pressure”. The importance of having quality programmes in all years of player’s development is crucial and the matches provide an ideal opportunity to start the U21 programme building towards the European Nations Championship next year. Passmore also revealed that the squad will be expanded to U23 during June and July including a six nations tournament in Antwerp in Belgium which allows for up to six players aged between 21-23. “Our programmes have to be about player development as well as team development and the tournament will provide the opportunity for any players stuck between U21 and senior squads, or on the periphery of the senior squad to have more international exposure”. With the likes of India, The Netherlands and Great Britain U23s in the tournament it will be a tough task. The U21s also have two matches series against England U21s now coached by former men’s boss Paul Revington including a three match series in Belfast in August when any U18 players can join the group for the first time.

David Passmore, head coach of Ireland’s U21 women’s team, has today announced his initial panel for the 2017/2018 season. Commenting on his selection, Passmore said “It’s great to start the next cycle over a year and a half out from the next European Championships and there is a strong presence from younger players in this group. Our aim is to develop the athletes in all areas over the next year to lay the foundations to push hard to qualify for the 2020 Junior World Cup and for them to develop towards senior representation. There is plenty of talent and athleticism in the group but the hard work needs to start now and we have some quality match opportunities for the summer to help us work towards these goals. Those players in the senior squad will prioritise that programme. The squad is not exclusive and I will continue to watch game live and by video brining any players I feel warrant a trial. Any coaches who would like a player considered should contact me”.

** The involvement of these players will be managed around their U18 Commitments
David Passmore, head coach of Ireland’s U21 Women, has announced his squad of 18 for the upcoming Eurohockey Junior Championships in Valencia. Ireland has a tough Group as they sit alongside England, France and Germany in Pool B. Passmore has a talented young side at his disposal with serval of the squad already capped at senior international level. An envious list of fixtures against some of Europe’s top sides has provided ideal preparation as they’ve faced England, Belgium, Spain and Scotland in recent months.
The side have a tough task ahead of them but Passmore is confident in his charges, he said “The whole U21 group of 30+ have worked really hard over the past 7-8 months and the final selection for Valencia was highly competitive. We’ve made steady progress over the past six weeks and the match performances have improved through the matches against Spain and Belgium.
The U21 Europeans is a tough tournament and our pool is a challenging one with all three teams having competed in the Junior World Cup last November. England have a very settled squad and Germany boast a number of senior players whilst fourteen of the French squad played in last week’s senior Europeans in Cardiff that will give them continuity. That said we have a tight knit group and I am confident that we can cause an upset our two. Our aim is to better Ireland’s previous best place finish of 6th place.”

Speaking about the U21 panel head coach David Passmore said “This is a big group with plenty of young potential and the players have shown a lot of energy. There is a lot of hard work ahead as we build to Valencia in August and the Junior World Cup highlighted the fitness levels and technical abilities we will need to achieve to be competitive with so many strong European teams. The management team have really been impressed by the application and intent shown by the group and that will stand us in great stead moving forward. Our aim is to maximise every individual’s ability and collectively become a cohesive and driven group with high standards on and off the pitch”.

2014 News:
Ireland Gain Promotion To A Division!!!
Ireland’s U21 women will compete in the Europeans in Vienna Austria from Monday 14th July – Sunday 30th July. The squad of 18 to represent Ireland is listed below. Coach Passmore commented on his squad “This squad has a good balance of senior players and young talent with depth. The preparation period has been a challenging one with exams, players out of the country or involved in the senior squad resulting in the whole squad only coming together for the first time this week. The squad has benefited from a number of excellent coaches and current international players contributing to our training camps and regional training. Competition for places was stiff with several players being unlucky to miss out. We now have six days together before the tournament starts to build on the preparation to date and fine tune our set pieces. The new tournament format represents a challenge given there are no room for errors and we will need to hit the tournament running’
