EY HOCKEY LEAGUE WOMEN’S DIVISION 1

RAILWAY UNION 4 OLD ALEXANDRA 1

Railway Union clinched second spot in the EYHL Division 1 on Saturday last. That meant they had the second automatic qualification spot in the semi-finals of the Champions Trophy secured a target for coach Una McCarthy and staff from the start of the season achieved. They started this game straight out of the blocks and had Old Alexandra defending from the earliest seconds. A penalty stroke was awarded to Railway Union following a penalty corner and Lisa McCarthy dispatched it to the net in the third minute to give Railway Union a 3rd minute lead.  Lily Lloyd added a second in the 7th minute and for the rest of the first quarter Railway looked in complete control of the game. 2-0 at the end of the first quarter. Old Alexandra grew into the game a bit more in the second quarter and had a number of opportunities inside the Railway Union D. Aoife Taaffe tucked one such opportunity into the net from close range in the 26th minute to make the score 2-1.

The next goal came in the 35th minute and Railway Union’s third goal was a brilliant piece of team play. Lily Lloyd’s lay off enabled Sarah Patton to rifle the ball into the net from inside the semi-circle. A goal of the season contender and something that would have looked amazing on television. Sarah Patton got her second of the game in the 63rd minute with another open play goal to make it 4-1 to Railway Union. Play was held up temporarily for an injury to Old Alexandra’s Ireland international Deirdre Duke who got hit full on by a ball struck from close range inside her own semi-circle. It was unclear how serious the injury was but it is hoped it is not too serious and she will be able to return to action very soon.

CATHOLIC INSTITUTE 0 UCD 1

UCD confirmed their spot in the EYHL Champions Trophy quarter-final with this away win against Catholic Institute. In a very closely fought affair it was 0-0 after quarter one. It was still scoreless at half time and by the end of quarter three this game had all the hallmarks of a scoreless draw. But in games like that sometimes a single goal can decide it. In this case a 57th minute goal from open play by Mikayla Power was enough to secure the win UCD finish the season on 25 League points safely in the top 6 regardless of results elsewhere. But results elsewhere will decide whom they will play in next week’s quarter final.

ULSTER ELKS 1 PEMBROKE WANDERERS 1

Ulster Elks went level on points with Old Alex thanks to this 1-1 draw. Jessica McMaster gave the Elks a 1-0 scoring from open play in the 18th minute. Pembroke Wanderers got back in level terms in the 31st minute to secure a share of the spoils thanks to Orla Macken’s converted penalty corner. There was no further scoring it ended 1-1.

EYHL WOMEN’S DIVISION 2 QUARTER-FINAL

BELFAST HARLEQUINS 4 LURGAN 0

Belfast Harlequins will be taking part in next week’s EYHL 2 semi-finals after a comprehensive 4-0 win over fellow Ulster Women’s Premier League side Lurgan. Harlequins took the lead when Emma Fraser converted a penalty corner in the 4th minute. They increased their lead to 2-0 when Claire Whiteside converted a penalty corner in the 32nd minute. Emily Anderson scored from open play to leave the Lagan-siders 3-0 up within 60 seconds. Jennifer McAuley sealed a 4-0 victory by converting a penalty corner in the 47th minute.

ARDS 1 AVOCA 0

Sometimes two teams are so evenly matched that a single goal is all that can separate them in knockout competitions. And sometimes the team that starts soonest out of the traps can grab a decisive goal very early into the match. So, it proved today at Londonderry Park where Ards scored in the 5th minute through a Louise Murray goal from open play. It proved enough to win them a place in the semi-finals next weekend. Monkstown’s relegation was more bad news for Avoca as they miss out on EYHL 2 next season as well following their elimination today. It finished Ards 1 Avoca 0 .

EYHL MEN’S DIVISION 1

SATURDAY APRIL 13TH 2024

CORINTHIANS 2 BANBRIDGE 2

For Corinthians they faced having to host the coronation of this season’s Kings of the League at the end of the game. Accordingly, they decided to make it as tough a match as possible. Banbridge then took the lead in the 56th minute through a goal from Adam McKee in open play. Corinthians raced back into the match to seal a point when Stephen Reid’s goal from open play in the 65th minute ensured a share of the spoils. Banbridge received their Championship trophy and their winner’s medals as the first step to a potential treble winning campaign being already Champions Trophy Semi-finalists and Irish Senior Cup Finalists.

The hosts were awarded theirs in the 37th minute which Michael Robson converted. They led 1-0 for a further 22 minutes until YMCA were awarded a 59th minute penalty stroke. Grant Glutz scored YMCA’s stroke and the game ended 1-1.

INSTONIANS 3 GLENANNE 5

UCD got off to the best possible start. Adam Luke Galbraith opening the scoring for the Students in the 2nd minute. But that was as good as it got for them. Evan Jennings equalised for Three Rock in the 6th minute, and it was still 1-1 at half time. Three Rock Rovers went into overdrive after the break they scored three goals in four minutes. James Walker made it 2-1 in the 40th minute, Matteo Ramoli scored against his former club a minute later for 3-1 and James Walker got his second of the game to make it 4-1 in the 44th minute. A converted penalty corner for Three Rock Rovers by their captain Harry McMahon sealed a 5-1 win in the 56th minute. UCD had already been relegated a week earlier.

In the EY Hockey League Men’s and Women’s Division 1 we have reached Round 18 this weekend, with the final matches formally deciding who makes the EY Champions Trophy play-offs.

In the Women’s Division Corinthians are already relegated but going into the final round of matches Monkstown and Pegasus are joint 8th and level on points, so who goes down could come down to their respective results this weekend.

The Champions Trophy picture may become clearer after the Thursday night’s result (Railway V Old Alex, Thursday April 11 at Park Avenue). But theoretically if UCD and Elks were to win on Saturday and Alex fail to pick up points in their remaining fixtures they could miss out on the playoffs.  Old Alexandra finish their campaign away to League winners Loreto and play second placed Railway Union on Thursday. Very tough final fixtures.

In the Men’s Division 1 Instonians and UCD are already relegated but there is still a number of permutations possible with regards to who makes the EYHL Quarter-finals next weekend.

In the EYHL 2 for both Men and Women we have reached the quarter-final rounds to try and find the final two semi-finalists who will advance to next weekend’s semi-final and final blockbuster. The winners of Pool A and Pool B got byes to the semi-finals and the next placed teams play off for the right to play against them in the semi-finals. The EYHL 2 finals are about bragging rights and a trophy as both teams that reach the decider will gain promotion to the EYHL 1 for season 2024-25.

EY HOCKEY LEAGUE MEN’S DIVISION  1

ANNADALE  4 BANBRIDGE 4

Annadale were still not mathematically safe at the start of this match but by the end they were home and hosed. They took the lead against newly crowned Champions Banbridge in the 4th minute when Charlie McKeown scored from open play. Louis Rowe equalised for a Banbridge side that clinched the title after Lisnagarvey were held scoreless by Glenanne, in the 28th minute. Ben Walker gave Annadale the lead in the 35th minute 2-1 but it only lasted a minute as Spencer Pinion converted a penalty corner in the 36th minute to restore parity. Neal Glassey scored from open play in the 38th minute to restore Annadale’s lead to 3-2. Spencer Pinion added a converted in the 40th minute to increase Annadale’s lead to 4-2.

Charlie Rowe added a goal from open play to make the score  4-3. Louis Rowe got an equaliser for Banbridge in the 61st minute with a goal from open play. Annadale had gone into this game with a 5-point lead over UCD. This point meant  that Annadale  had secured their place in the Men’s Division 1 of the EYHL for another year.

INSTONIANS 2  THREE ROCK ROVERS  2

Bottom of the table  Instonians picked up a point in this game at Shawsbridge. Ross Kelly opened the scoring with a 32nd minute converted penalty corner for Instonians. Alastair Haughton equalised for Three Rock Rovers from a converted penalty corner in the 44th minute. Ben Johnson gave Three Rock Rovers the lead with a goal from open play in the 50th minute. But Ben Palmer secured a point for Instonians with a converted penalty corner in the 67th minute. It finished 2-2.

LISNAGARVEY 7 CORINTHIANS 1

Lisnagarvey took out their frustration from neighbours held scoreless on Saturday against visitors Corinthians on Sunday winning 7-1. Matthew Nelson got things off to an early start scoring from open play in the 4th minute for 1-0. He added a second in the 6th minute for 2-0. Daniel Nelson added a third goal after 17 minutes for 3-0. Matthew Nelson completed his hat-trick in the 23rd minute for 4-0, which was the half-time score. Ben Nelson made it 5-0 in the 51st minute. Andrew Williamson made it 6-0 in the 62nd minute. Davy Howard converted the only successful penalty corner of the afternoon in the 67 minute to put Corinthians on the scoresheet at 6-1. Oliver Kidd scored in the 70th minute to make the final score 7-1.

MONKSTOWN 1 GLENANNE 3

After a scoreless first quarter, Gavin Gibney gave the visitors the lead in the 22nd minute with a goal from open play. Glenanne led 1-0 at half-time. Glenanne increased their lead when Shane O’Donoghue converted a penalty corner in the 44th minute to make it 2-0 to Glenanne. Richard Couse converted another penalty corner for Glenanne in the 57th minute to put the Glen’s 3-0 ahead. Monkstown finally got on the scoresheet thanks to a Stephen Cole converted penalty corner in the 61st minute to leave the final score Monkstown 1 Glenanne 3.

UCD 0 YMCA 1

UCD went into this match needing to win today and again on Saturday next and for Annadale to lose their remaining games in order to avoid relegation back to Leinster Division 1A. As we’ve already seen Annadale got a point so even if UCD had won today it would have made no difference. This game started half an hour before Annadale’s and therefore UCD had to put down a marker given they would finish their match earlier. By every other metric you can think of apart from the scoreboard UCD dominated this game. In the first,  second and third they were ahead in terms of possession time spent in the opposition 23 metre area and circle entries. They did everything but score coming close on a number of occasions.  Both goalkeepers had saves to make as YMCA were resourceful on the counterattack and got into the semi-circle as often as their share of the ball allowed. But if you don’t avail of the chances you are given it sometimes comes back to bite you. Mark Collins was unlucky not to give UCD the lead in the fourth quarter in what was UCDs best chance from open play. The students didn’t capitalise on their corner opportunities either penalty corners or from the 23-meter line. Ross Henderson converted YMCAs 69th minute Penalty corner for the only goal of the game.

UCD:- Ross Clarke (GK); Samuel Ryder; Josh Filgas; Kevin O’Dea (C); Sam Walker; Josh Gill;  Benjamin Stewart; Conor Walsh; Andrew Fox; Mark Collins; Brian Smyth

SUBS USED: Mark Smyth; Gavin Gleeson; Adam Luke Galbraith; Bryan Lydon; Tim Cope

YMCA:- Mark Ingram (GK); Ethan McInerney; Adam Walker; Ndudzo Lembethe (C); Scott Ruttle; Harry McCarthy; Ben O’Grady; Sam Hyland; Ross Henderson; Tevin Kok; Matthew Campton

EYHL WOMEN’S DIVISION 1

RAILWAY UNION 4 PEMBROKE WANDERERS 1

Railway Union Irish Senior Cup finalists had a terrific 4-1 win over local rivals Pembroke Wanderers in this derby game at Park Avenue. Niamh Carey with a goal from open play in the 1st minute gave the hosts the lead.  They led 1-0 at half-time. Orla Macken converted a penalty corner to get Pembroke on the scoresheet for the equaliser in the 38th minute. Sarah Hawkshaw gave Railway Union the lead with a goal from open play in the 61st minute to make it 2-1 to Railway. Niamh Carey increased their lead with  her second of the match, another one from open play for 3-1 in the 65th minute and Katie Mullan sealed the win, a minute later to make the final scoreline Railway Union 4 Pembroke Wanderers 1.

EYHL WOMEN’S  DIVISION 2 POOL A

GREENFIELDS 3 KILKENNY 2

Kilkenny took the lead in the 20th minute when Katie Leslie scored.  They led 1-0 at half-time.  They increased their lead in the 43rd minute when Katie Leslie got her second of the game from open play. The hosts began the comeback process when UCD alumni Brenda Flannery converted a penalty corner in the 49th minute to make it 2-1. She got her second of the game from open play for the equaliser in the 58th minute to make it 2-2. Brenda Flannery completed her hat-trick with a converted penalty corner in the 63rd minute to secure a comeback 3-2 win for Greenfields.

EY HOCKEY LEAGUE MEN’S DIVISION 1

THREE ROCK ROVERS 2 MONKSTOWN  2

Visitors Monkstown started strongly and took the lead through a converted penalty corner from Stephen Cole in the 5th minute. They still led 1-0 at half-time. Davy Carson increased the visitor’s lead in the 43rd minute with a goal from open play. Three Rock Rovers eventually responded in the 45th minute when Ben Johnson converted a penalty corner.  Alistair Empey’s converted penalty corner in the 50th minute  secured the share of the spoils for Rovers.

CORINTHIANS 3 ANNADALE 1

Corinthians opened the scoring in the 9th minute when Stephen Reid scored from open play.  They led 1-0 at half-time. Corinthians increased their lead in the 41st minute when Davy Howard converted a penalty stroke. 2-0 to the hosts. Annadale got on the scoresheet when Charlie McKeown scored from open play in the 44th minute. 2-1 but Corinthians put the result beyond doubt when Max Neill scored from open play in the final four minutes to seal a win for Corinthians. It ended 3-1. After this result Annadale remain five points ahead of UCD.

YMCA 4 INSTONIANS 0

YMCA ended up with a rather comfortable margin of victory in this game at Wesley College. Adam Walker put them 1-0 ahead in the 6th when he converted a penalty corner. Instonians provided stubborn resistance in the first half and Grant Glutz’s goal in the 32nd minute was the only addition to the scoresheet by halftime where YMCA led by 2-0. Harry McCarthy converted another penalty corner in the 53rd minute to make it 3-0 and three minutes from time Tevin Kok from open play completed the scoring to make it 4-0 at full-time.

BANBRIDGE 5 UCD 0

Not a good day at the office for the Students who are fighting for their survival in the EYHL Men’s Division 1. By contrast a good day at the office for the defending champions hoping to retain the title for another season. Louis Rowe opened the scoring in the 8th minute with a field goal for 1-0. It was a lead they held onto until half-time. Matthew McKee added another goal in the 36th minute to increase Bann’s lead to 2-0. Louis Rowe got his second goal of the game to make it 3-0 in the 44th minute. Philip Browne scored two penalty corners in the 59th minute and 70th minute respectively to complete the scoring. For UCD they must win their remaining games and hope Annadale lose their remaining games.

LISNAGARVEY 0 GLENANNE  0

It was honours even in every respect at Comber Road wen Lisnagarvey and Glenanne played out a coreless draw. You would have got generous odds on this game ending scoreless whatever about it being in stalemate as Glenanne and Lisnagarvey have been two of the most prolific goalscoring teams in the League all season long. It wasn’t that chippy a game in the 31st minute Matthew Nelson was green carded, but Glenanne did not take advantage of having an extra player. Later in the game in the

42nd minute both James Corry of Lisnagarvey and Sannon Boucher of Glenanne were green carded both teams being reduced to 10 players each. Neither side could capitalize on the extra room on the field.

Neil Byrne was green carded in the 45th minute and Lisnagarvey did not take advantage of the man advantage either.  Not even Theo Boitel’s yellow card in the 65th minute made any difference.  All that remains to be done is to congratulate both goalkeepers on keeping clean sheets in this game and move on. So take a bow James Milliken (Lisnagarvey) and David Lawless (Glenanne).

EYHL WOMEN’S DIVISION  1

PEGASUS 3 CATHOLIC INSTITUTE 3

Pegasus are determined to hang on to their EYHL Division 1 status and proved the point in this game at Queen’s University Sportsground against Irish Senior Cup Finalists Catholic Institute. Zara Malseed gave Pegasus the lead with a goal from open play in the 11th minute. Sophie McDowell increased their lead in the 22nd with another open play goal to make it 2-0. Catholic Institute responded through a goal from Leah Cleary from open play in the 29th minute and it was 2-1 at half time. Pegasus captain Ruth McCandless scored another open play goal in the 46th minute to leave Pegasus leading by 3-1. Catholic Institute showed they are made of sterner stuff and responded with goals from Sarah Fitzgerald from a converted penalty corner in the 53rd minute to make it 3-2. They secured a point then when Naomi Carroll’s 59th goal from open play secured a point for the visitors and the game ended 3-3.

OLD ALEXANDRA 3 CORINTHIANS 1

Old Alexandra secured another precious win in their quest for a play off berth with this game against Corinthians. Abi Russell converted a 2nd minute penalty corner for 1-0. She got her second of the game from open play in the 9th minute to leave the Milltown based side 2-0 ahead. A converted penalty corner in the 35th minute appeared to have sealed the win on the stroke of half-time where they led 3-0. Corinthians might be struggling for points this season, but they don’t admit defeat without putting up some kind of a fight and Ava Maleady’s 56th minute field goal was just reward for their efforts but alas that was all they could muster on this occasion. It finished Old Alex 3 Corinthians 1.

LORETO 2 MONKSTOWN 2

Loreto the recently crowned League champions don’t give up many points in the League during the current season so it was a bit of surprise that they gave up two points on this occasion and Monkstown deserve great credit for helping themselves to one of those. Chloe Watkins from open play in the first minute gave the visitors a 1-0 lead. Yasmin Pratt equalised for the homesters in the 7th minute. Rebecca Carthy restored Monkstown’s lead in the 27th minute with another goal from open play and they led 2-1 at half-time. Champions don’t like losing and hate losing at home even more so. Rachel Kelly’s 57th minute goal from open play secured a point for the Champions. The game ended 2-2.

RAILWAY UNION 4 PEMBROKE WANDERERS 1

Railway Union Irish Senior Cup finalists had a terrific 4-1 win over local rivals Pembroke Wanderers in this derby game at Park Avenue. Niamh Shaw with a goal from open play gave the hosts the lead. Orla Macken converted a penalty corner to get Pembroke on the scoresheet for the equaliser. Sarah Hawkshaw gave Railway Union the lead with a goal from open play to make it 2-1 to Railway. Niamh Carey increased their lead with another open play goal for 3-1 and Katie Mullan sealed the win to make the final scoreline Railway Union 4 Pembroke Wanderers 1.

UCD 1 ULSTER ELKS 2

UCD played Ulster Elks in a real six pointer in the EYHL Women’s Division 1. Ulster Elks needed points for two completely different reasons 1/ to make themselves mathematically safe from relegation 2/ to try and secure 6th place and a route to the play-offs. For UCD reason 2 was the most pressing need. Despite being relatively speaking back to full strength after not having their internationals available and also Katie Jane Marshall who missed the Irish Senior Cup semi-final on Wednesday night due to a slight injury, they didn’t deliver on the promise that their superior ball possession and indeed the number of penalty corners they racked up in this game suggested they should. Instead, it was the visitors with a fraction of the possession and set pieces, who took the lead when Chloe Stewart scored from open play in the 12th minute. After a period when the hosts dominated possession and had a number of penalty corner opportunities, it was Ulster Elks who increased their lead when Serena Campuzano scored from open play in the 22d minute to leave the visitors 2-0 ahead at half-time. Penalty corners are the most important set piece in the game of hockey. How often has that mantra been drilled into hockey players young and old? Well, it looked as if UCD Women’s firsts had forgotten this pearl of wisdom as it was only their final penalty corner of the day having been awarded more than half a dozen that hit home. By then Mikayla Power’s late finish was a mere consolation goal. To be fair in recent weeks, penalty corners had actually been one of their strengths. The final score was UCD 1 Ulster Elks 2 .

Railway forced a penalty corner which was blocked on the line by Erika Gallagher. A penalty stroke was awarded, and Lisa McCarthy converted it, 1-1. Towards the end of the quarter the ball ricocheted around the UCD circle Sarah Patton sent a short pass to Lily Lloyd who scored 2-1 Railway Union. It was still 2-1 at half-time.
