Hockey Ireland Weekend Results: Saturday January 27

A busy weekend for domestic Hockey, where there were games across the National Cups and Trophies, but we begin our review with details of

the EY Hockey League Division 2 and Men’s Pool A.

 

EYHL 2 MEN POOL A

 

QUEEN’S UNIVERSITY  3- 4  PEMBROKE WANDERERS    

A seven-goal thriller for those in attendance at this game. Matthew Scott put the visitors 1-0 ahead in the 5th minute. Harry Scott opened his account for the hosts from open play in the 13th minute to make it 1-1. Adam Reddick from open play gave the Students a 2-1 lead in the 20th minute. James Maginnis equalised for Pembroke Wanderers in the 26th minute with a goal from open play.  Scott Sullivan restored the visitors lead in the 33rd minute with another open play goal. Harry Scott got his second goal of the match to restore the Students to parity with another goal from open play in the 38th minute it was now 3-3. Ross Breytenbach made the game safe for the visitors with what proved to be the last  goal of the game on 49 minutes yet again from open to play to secure a 4-3 win for Pembroke Wanderers.

 

BANDON  4- 4 BANGOR 

An eight goal thriller for the fans to feast on at Bandon Grammar School in this EYHL2 Men’s Pool A clash.

The visitors took the lead in the 8th minute when Rhys Cunningham  scored from open play. They increased their lead when Samuel McMillan scored from open play a minute later. Bandon responded through a goal from Ethan Hamilton-Foot in the 23rd minute from open play. It was 2-1 to Bangor at this point.

Bangor increased their lead in the 27th minute through  Callum Duncan  from open play. Bandon narrowed Bangor’s lead to a single goal in the 33rd minute through David Smith to leave Bangor leading 3-2 at half-time. Bandon got back on level terms in the 43rd when Ethan Hamilton-Foot got his second of the game converting a penalty corner. Bandon then went in front for the first time in the match in the 51st minute when Clinton Sweetnam scored from a penalty stroke.  Bangor secured a share of the spoils when James Holley scored from open play to leave the score 4-4 at the final whistle.

 

EYHL 2 MEN POOL B

COOKSTOWN 4-2 CORK CHURCH OF IRELAND     

Cookstown beat Cork Harlequins by four goals to two in their EYHL2 Men’s Pool B clash in Cookstown. Robert Sweetnam gave the visitors the lead from open play in the 11th minute. It was Cookstown 0 Cork Church of Ireland 1. Cookstown got an equaliser through Callum Anderson from open play in the 17th minute. Ryan Millar gave the hosts the lead in the 28th minute with another goal from open play. Cookstown 2 Cork Church  of Ireland 1. But the visitors equalised themselves when Jonathan Spillane scored from open play in the 36th minute. Callum Anderson got his second goal of the game in the 54th minute from open play to put Cookstown a further goal ahead at 3-1 and Michael Kerr got an insurance goal of sorts with his open play goal in the 59th minute , to leave the final score Cookstown 4 Cork Church of Ireland 2.

 

SOUTH ANTRIM 2-5 CORK HARLEQUINS

Cork Harlequins had a comfortable 5-2 victory over South Antrim after their visit to Belfast. Julian Dale opened his account for the visitors in the 9th minute and added a second from open play to leave Harlequins 2-0 ahead after 10 minutes. South Antrim responded through a converted penalty corner from Jordan Robinson in the 15th minute. Julian Dale completed his hat-trick converting a penalty corner in the 28th minute to leave Harlequins 3-1 ahead. John Whyte made it 4-1 from open play in the 32nd minute and Nestor Jiminez Martinez made it 5-1 from open play in the 37th minute. Wot Ryan’s field goal in the 49th minute left the final score South Antrim 2 Cork Harlequins 5.

 

EYHL 2 WOMEN POOL A

BELFAST HARLEQUINS 2 -3 CORK HARLEQUINS    

It was the battle of the Harlequins at Deramore Park where the Belfast variety hosted their Cork counterparts. Belfast Harlequins took the lead in the 29th minute when Emma Fraser converted a penalty stroke. Within five minutes Cork Harlequins were back level  when Michelle Barry scored from open play.  Yvonn O’Byrne gave the visitors the lead  when she converted a penalty corner in the 40th minute. Claire Whiteside got Belfast Harlequins back on terms when she scored in the 50th minute from open play to leave the score 2-2.  All three points were heading back to the River Lee after Jane O’Brien got a third goal for her team in the 66th minute to leave the final score Belfast Harlequins 2  Cork Harlequins 3.

 

AVOCA  2-0 GREENFIELDS   

Avoca continued their impressive form this season with a 2-0 win over Connacht Women’s Division 1 side  Greenfields at Newtownpark . Caro Theunisz put the hosts 1-0 ahead with a goal in the 27th minute from open play.  Zoe Watterson made the game safe for Avoca with a second from open play in the 41st minute to secure the win.

 

EYHL 2 WOMEN POOL B 

UNIVERSITY COLLEGE CORK 3-1 MUCKROSS

Munster Division 1 side UCC had too much fire power for their Leinster Division 1 visitors Muckross at the Mardyke in this EYHL 2 Women’s Pool B clash. Julia McCarthy opened the scoring on the half hour mark with a goal from open play for the Students. Muckross responded quickly when in the 31st minute Katie Fitzgerald converted a penalty corner. Two late goals for UCC in the 66th minute when Rebecca Kingston converted a penalty corner and one from open play in the final minute were enough to secure all the points and win for the Students by 3-1.

 

LURGAN  1-2 ARDS   

Ards who recently were crowned Ulster Indoor champions took the lead in the 13th minute through Ulster Women’s Premier League’s leading goalscorer Rachel Houston’s goal from open play. Susannah Cotter made it 2-0 to Ards with another open play effort on 19 minutes. Lurgan got on the scoresheet in the 41st minute when they were awarded a penalty stroke which was converted by Stephanie Thompson.

It remained Lurgan 1 Ards 2 at full time.

EYHL 2 MEN POOL A

BANGOR   5 – 4 QUEEN’S UNIVERSITY, BANGOR AURORA

A nine goal all Ulster thriller got Pool A underway at Bangor Aurora. Callum Duncan scored from open play to make the score Bangor 1 Queen’s 0 in the 11th minute. Ruben Boyd increased Bangor’s lead from open play in the 16th minute. The Students responded when Conor Irwin converted a penalty corner in the 17th minute. Conor Irwin got his second goal from his second penalty corner conversion in  the 31st minute to level the score at 2-2.

Nathan Belshaw restored Bangor’s lead in the 36th minute from open play  to make it 3-2 . Andrew Clarke equalised for Queen’s in the 53rd minute with another goal from open play 3-3. Samuel McMillan restored Bangor’s lead yet again on the hour mark to make it 4-3. Harry Scott responded for the students in the 67th minute from open play and in the final minute Bangor sealed a win through Ryan Burgess to make the final score5-4.

 

PEMBROKE WANDERERS 3-2 AVOCA, SERPENTINE AVENUE

Marshall Puzey put the visitors one up in this game in Pool A . But two goals from penalty corners in the 24th and 40th minute respectively by Jack Flanagan put Pembroke Wanderers 2-1 ahead. David Lynch scored a 3rd goal for Wanderers from open play in the 49th minute a last minute goal for Avoca by Guy Sarratt from open play proved a late consolation as it finished 3-2 to Pembroke Wanderers.

 

EYHL 2  MEN POOLB

CORK CHURCH OF IRELAND 1- 0 SOUTH ANTRIM, GARRYDUFF

Cork Church Of Ireland secured a win at Garryduff, in their Pool B match against South Antrim through a single goal by Harry Jackson in the 64th minute.

 

CORK HARLEQUINS 3 – 1 RAILWAY UNION, HARLEQUINS PARK, FARMER’S CROSS  

Julian Dale grabbed a hat-trick as Cork Harlequins grabbed three points in their opening Pool B game in the EYHL 2. His first goal was a converted penalty corner after 5 minutes to make 1-0 to Harlequins.

Dale’s second of the game also from a converted penalty corner in the 18th minute made it 2-0 to Harlequins. Jan Trejbal got Railway Union on the scoresheet when he converted a penalty corner in the 21st minute to make it 2-1 to Harlequins. Dale completed his hat-trick with a goal from open play on32 minutes to make the score 3-1 and it remained thus to the final whistle.

 

EYHL 2 WOMEN POOL A

CORK HARLEQUINS  3- 0  KILKENNY, HARLEQUINS PARK, FARMER’S CROSS

Former international Cliodhna Sargent gave Harlequins the lead in the 15th minute from a penalty corner.  Anne O’Farrell increased their lead in the 57th minute from open play and captain Michelle Barry sealed the victory with two minutes to go to make it Harlequins 3 Kilkenny 0 at full time.

 

GREENFIELDS  0-3 BELFAST HARLEQUINS, SPORTS CAMPUS IRELAND ABBOTSTOWN

Connacht Women’s Division 1 side Greenfields played their home game against Belfast Harlequins at Sports Campus Ireland this afternoon.

It was their Ulster Premier Women’s League opponents who had the upper hand getting all three points and keeping a clean sheet into the bargain.

Susie McCollum opened the scoring for Harlequins in the 31st minute when she converted a penalty corner. Two goals from open play scored in the 53rd and 55th minutes by Emma Fraser secured the three points for the Ulsterwomen.

 

EYHL 2  WOMEN POOL B

ARDS 1 – 2 UNIVERSITY COLLEGE CORK, LONDONDERRY PARK

Munster Senior Leaguers UCC travelled to Newtownards and came away with a 2-1 win over Ards. Jane Murphy gave the students the lead converting a penalty corner in the 4th minute to put the Cork side 1-0 up. Rachel Houston equalised for the Ulster Women’s Premier Leaguers when she converted a penalty corner in the 18th minute. But all three points were on their way south when Jane Murphy got her second goal of the match with another penalty corner conversion in the 48th minute to secure the 2-1 win for UCC.

 

MUCKROSS 3- 0 UNIVERSITYOF GALWAY   MUCKROSS PARK  

Muckross opened their Pool B account with a comfortable win over Connacht Women’s Division 1 side University of Galway. Jenny Buttimer opened the scoring from a penalty corner in the 39th minute. Mia Phelan Sweeney made it 2-0 from another penalty corner in the 49th minute. Julia Holmes completed the job in the 57th minute with a goal from open play to secure a 3-0 win .

 

MEN’S IRISH SENIOR CUP

 

N.I. CIVIL SERVICE 9  – 0 COOKSTOWN      

NICS had a comprehensive win over Cookstown in the First round of the Irish Senior Cup. They will be in the hat for the second round draw. Some of the first round ties have still to be played over the next few weeks.

INSTONIANS V UCD was postponed owing to the death of Derek Watt, past President of Ulster Hockey and the father of Stephen Watt, Instonians’ coach. Condolences to the Watt family, their clubmates and their many friends on their tragic loss. The game will be rescheduled for later in the season.

 

GLENANNE 2-0 CORINTHIAN

The early match this weekend was at St. Andrew’s College where fourth placed Glenanne hosted seventh placed Corinthian. Glenanne and Corinthians produced a scoreless first quarter and indeed first half. Things began to change in the fourth and final quarter when they opened the scoring on fifty-five minutes when Gary Shaw scored from open play. Glenanne captain Bradley Venter made the points secure with another goal in the sixty-eighth minute. Given their women’s team also were defeated it was a bad day at the office for Corinthians as a club.

 

THREE ROCK ROVERS 3-4 BANBRIDGE 

League leaders Banbridge travelled to join table toppers Three Rock Rovers in the tie of the round. And what a match they produced a seven-goal thriller the outcome of which sees Banbridge open up a gap at the top of the table. Ben Johnson opened the scoring for Rovers with a goal from open play in the second minute. Josh Moffett replied with a goal from open play in the fifth minute to leave the score 1-1. Bann then took the lead when Moffett got his second goal of the game in the seventeenth minute. Philip Brown increased their lead in the twenty-sixth minute from a converted penalty corner. Three Rock responded through Alistair Empey who got their second goal of the game in the thirty-fifth minute from open play. 2-3 at this stage but Johnny McKee got a goal from open play to leave Banbridge 4-2 ahead after forty minutes. There was still time for Three Rock to respond but they did so through Ben Johnson’s second of the game in the sixty-forth minute. It was Three Rock Rovers 3 Banbridge 4 at this point but there was no further scoring, and the defending League champions came out of Grange Road with all three points.

 

YMCA 2-2 LISNAGARVEY

Fifth placed YMCA took on third placed Lisnagarvey at Wesley College. A scoreless first half was followed by an equally blank third quarter but the game burst into life in the final quarter. YMCA took the lead through Ben O’Grady’s converted penalty corner in the fifty-fifth minute. Matthew Nelson grabbed an equaliser in the fifty -eighth minute from open play. YMCA regained their lead in the sixtieth minute from a converted penalty corner. Lisnagarvey grabbed a draw from the jaws of defeat in the sixty fifth minute with a second goal of the game for Matthew Nelson from open play. It finished YMCA 2 Lisnagarvey 2.

 

MONKSTOWN  5-1 ANNADALE 

Sixth placed Monkstown took on ninth placed Annadale in the final match of the round. After a scoreless first quarter, Keith Kenning got Monkstown off the mark just before half time to leave the Sky Blues 1-0 ahead at the break. A scoreless third quarter was followed by an absolutely breathless fourth quarter. Two goals apiece for Monkstown’s Lee Cole and Jeremy Duncan and a reply from Annadale’s Fergus Gibson left the final score Monkstown 5 Annadale 1.

LORETO 2-1 RAILWAY UNION

This top of the table clash at Beaufort was the outstanding fixture from Round 5 of the EYHL Women’s Division of the day. Loreto took the lead in the seventh minute with a Rachel Kelly goal from open play. They increased their lead in the sixteenth minute through Rebekah Fitzpatrick, to lead 2-0 at the end of the first quarter. Railway Union responded in the twenty-ninth minute through a Sarah Patton goal from open play to leave the half-time score 2-1 to Loreto. There was no further scoring in quarters three and four and the score remained the same at the final whistle. The 2-1 win sees Loreto go three points clear of Railway Union at the top of the table.

 

CORINTHIANS 0-1 ULSTER ELKS

Ulster Elks visited Corinthians and needed only a single goal to secure the points in the EYHL Women’s Division 1 clash at St. Columba’s College. Elks gained a modicum of revenge for being beaten by Corinthians in last seasons EYHL 2 final at the same venue when Serena Campuzzano put them a goal up from open play as early as the sixth minute of the game. There was no further scoring in quarters two , three and four and the 1-0 scoreline was enough to secure all three points for the visitors.

 

UCD 1-1 OLD ALEXANDRA

The defending League Champions as well as today’s opponents have been through a period of transition in the close season with many departures and many new arrivals in their respective playing staffs. It will take a period of time for the new players to adjust to this level of hockey in Ireland’s top flight. UCD took the lead through a penalty corner converted by Sophia Cole in the eleventh minute. UCD came close to scoring hitting the bar and the post but on days when the luck is with you these chances go in…. this was not one of those days. Old Alexandra responded when Abby Russell reacted fastest in the sixty fifth minute to score and make the score 1-1. Both sides had further chances to score in the closing minutes and the last action of the match was a penalty corner for UCD which remained unconverted it finished UCD 1 Old Alexandra 1.

PEMBROKE WANDERERS 1-2 CATHOLIC INSTITUTE

Amy Kate Trevor scored in the fifth minute to give Pembroke Wanderers an early lead from a converted penalty corner. It was a lead that lasted until half time.

At the start of the third quarter Catholic Institute were back in the match when Aoife Hickey converted a penalty corner on thirty-six minutes. Catholic Institute turned things in their favour in the fifty-third minute when a Naomi Carroll goal from open play was enough to give them all three points in a 2-1 win. For Pembroke Wanderers a first defeat of the campaign and for Catholic Institute a badly needed win.

 

MONKSTOWN 2-1 PEGASUS

Bottom of the table Monkstown got their first points of the season and their first win when they came from behind to beat Pegasus by 2-1 at Rathdown school. A scoreless first quarter was followed by two further scoreless quarters to leave the score still 0-0 at the end of the third quarter. Zara Malseed gave the visitors the lead in the fifty-first minute. But Monkstown dug deep and equalised through a penalty corner converted by Sophie Moore in the sixty-fifth minute. Less than a minute later Monkstown sealed the victory when Nicci Daly scored from open play to secure Monkstown’s first win of the current season. Monkstown struggled in the bottom end of the table for most of last season and only secured safety near the end of last season. On this occasion, having secured a win much earlier in the season, they should reach safety much sooner and this result could mark the beginning of a resurgence.

EYHL Men’s Division 1 Oct 21

Fourth placed Glenanne get things underway on Saturday Oct 21 when they take on seventh placed Corinthian at St. Andrew’s College at 1:30 p.m. League leaders Three Rock Rovers host joint League leaders Banbridge in a top of the table clash at Grange Road starting at 2:30 p.m. Bottom side Instonians take on eight placed UCD who gained promotion from EYHL 2 at the end of last season in Shawsbridge at 3 p.m. Fifth placed YMCA host third placed Lisnagarvey at Wesley College beginning at 3:45 p.m. and finally, sixth placed Monkstown take on ninth placed Annadale at Rathdown School with a 4:15 p.m. start.

 

EYHL Women’s Division 1 Oct 21

Newly promoted Corinthian find themselves in ninth place in the table after four rounds and in search of their first points of the season as they entertain fifth placed Ulster Elks at St. Columba’s College with a 1:15 p.m. start. At the same time, League leaders Loreto host second placed Railway Union in a top of the table clash at Beaufort in what is the tie of the round. Defending champions UCD who are currently in fourth place host sixth placed Old Alexandra at the National Stadium starting at 2:05 p.m. Tenth placed Monkstown still in search of their first points of the campaign host Pegasus at Rathdown School with a 2:20 p.m. start and Pembroke Wanderers currently third placed in the League table host seventh placed Catholic Institute at Serpentine Avenue at 2:30 p.m.

Banbridge took on Annadale in their re-arranged EYHL Men’s Division1fixture on Tuesday night in Havelock Park. Annadale took an early lead through a Michael Robson converted penalty corner in the 4th minute. Banbridge got back on level terms through a Louis Rowe goal from open play and it was 1-1 at the end of quarter one. The two sides remained level right up to half time. A scoreless third quarter followed and then Banbridge got going in the fourth quarter. Louis Rowe got his second of the game on 54 minutes and a last-minute goal from Johnny McKee secured the victory by three goals to one. Banbridge leapfrog Lisnagarvey to second in the table behind Three Rock Rovers on goal difference.

 

Women’s Hockey Challenge – Saturday Oct 21

Kilkeel host Clonakilty in an outstanding first round tie in the Irish Women’s Hockey Challenge this coming Saturday 2.30 p.m. at Kilkeel High School.

EYHL WOMEN’S DIVISION 1

Joint Table toppers Railway Union host Corinthian at Park Avenue in the early game starting at 11a.m. Fifth placed Ulster Elks host Catholic Institute with a 1 p.m. in Jordanstown. Joint Table Toppers Loreto take on a UCD side who have a perfect defensive record so far after three games played with zero conceded at Beaufort with a 1:15p.m. start. Seventh placed Old Alexandra take on bottom placed Monkstown at Alexandra College with a 1 :30p.m. start. UCD 2-0 MONKSTOWN

The defending EYHL Women’s Division 1 Champions UCD wearing their breast cancer awareness pink outfit took on Monkstown in their EYHL Division 1 game at the national stadium in Belfield. It was a fairly lively tight first quarter which ended scoreless. Sophia Cole got a green card in the 14th minute which was 2 minutes on the sideline for her. Things got going in the second quarter. UCD took the lead through Leah O’Shea’s field goal in the 26th minute and the Students led 1-0 at half time. Lauren Johnston served a 2-minute suspension for UCD when she was green carded in the 32nd minute. And Katharine Egan got one in the 35th minute leaving the team shorthanded for most of that 5-minute stretch up to the 37th minute. Monkstown carved out a few chances of their own but were unable to get past a superb defence marshalled by Sarah McAuley and Katie Jane- Marshall and backstopped by the excellent Erika Gallagher. Aine Naughton made it 2-0 to UCD in the 61st minute from a field goal. And the Students held out for the victory. Leah Paul got a Yellow Card three minutes from time leaving UCD to see out the game down to 10 players, but they managed to see out the win.
It finished UCD 2 Monkstown 0.

Catholic Institute hosted Railway Union and produced a five-goal thriller. The visitors went 1-0 in the first quarter through a goal from Orla Patton.
Railers increased their lead six minutes into the second quarter through Kate Dillon and led 2-0 at half time. Emer Ryan got a goal back for Catholic Institute in the third quarter and Railway Union were still 2-1 ahead at the end of the third quarter. In the 54th minute Railway struck again to lead 3-1 through Michelle Carey. Catholic Institute got a late consolation goal from Naomi Carroll to leave the final score Catholic Institute 2 Railway Union 3.

Pembroke and Old Alex had a closely fought encounter at Serpentine Avenue and there were no goals in the opening half. And the second half followed and identical pattern as the game ended in a 0-0 draw. The game was so even both teams had one person green carded. Old Alex had Aoife Taaffe green carded in the 35th minute and Pembroke had Ellen Curran green carded in the 45th minute. Being down to 10 didn’t adversely affect either side.

Corinthians hosted Loreto at St. Columba’s College. Rachel Kelly gave Loreto the lead in the 3rd minute when she converted a penalty corner. It was still 1-0 to the visitors at half-time. A scoreless third quarter meant that going into the closing minutes Loreto still led by the slenderest of margins. That was addressed by a 55th minute goal from Christina Hamill which secured a 2-0 win for the visitors.

Pegasus hosted Ulster Elks in an Ulster derby at the Queen’s University sportsgrounds in the late match on Saturday afternoon. Pegasus took the lead in the 26th minute through a Zara Malseed converted penalty corner and led 1-0 at half-time. Pegasus maintained their lead and looked to be on their way to securing their first win of the season right up to three minutes from time. Elks were awarded a penalty stroke in the 67th minute which Serena Campuzzano converted to deny Pegasus the win but they did collect their first League point of the season.

EYHL Division 1 Men

Glenanne beat Monkstown 3-1 in their EYHL clash at St. Andrew’s College. Shane O’Donoghue’s converted penalty corner in the 23rd minute opened the scoring for Glenanne. His second of the game which he stuck in the roof of the net made it 2-0 in the 53rd minute. Shane O’Donoghue’s third of the game showed that Ireland’s record international goalscorer is as sharp as ever, as he gave Glenanne a 3-0 lead in the 58th minute. A late consolation goal, four minutes from the end, a penalty stroke scored by Lee Cole for Monkstown made the final score 3-1.

YMCA took on UCD at Wesley College and opened the scoring in the 9th minute through Adam Walker. Sam Hyland made it 2-0 for YM in the 26th minute. UCD got their first of the game in the 29th minute through Sam Walker and YM led 2-1 at half time. UCD got a deserved equaliser when Alan Sothern capitalised on a defensive error in the 47th minute to make it 2-2 . Grant Glutz restored YM’s lead in the 52nd minute and Tevin Kok added a fourth in the 59th minute and it finished YMCA 4 UCD 2 .

Three Rock Rovers took on Ulster side Instonians at Grange Road and ran out 5-1 winners. Ben Johnson gave Rovers the lead on 5 minutes from a converted penalty corner. Alistair Empey increased their lead in the 25th minute from open play. He got his second of the game to make it 3-0 to Three Rock Rovers in the 28th minute and it remained 3-0 at halftime. Peter Lynch further increased Rovers lead in the 50th minute to make it 4-0 to Three Rock. James Walker got a fifth goal for Rovers in the 57th minute. Instonians got a very late consolation goal a minute later through Matthew McAreavey from open play to leave the final score Three Rock Rovers 5 Instonians 1.

Corinthian hosted table toppers Lisnagarvey at St. Columba’s College but surprisingly managed to bring their winning run to a close by holding them to 2-2. After a scoreless opening quarter Lisnagarvey raced into a 2-0 lead. Matthew Nelson got his first of the game, from a converted penalty corner in the 31st minute and Garvey led 1-0 at half time. He increased their lead with his second of the match in the 40th minute from open play and Garvey led 2-0 at the end of quarter three. But Corinthians began the mother of all comebacks when David Howard converted a penalty corner in the 54th minute to leave Garvey leading 2-1. Two minutes from time from yet another penalty corner Corinthians drew level this time Max Neill converted the penalty corner to secure a point from the jaws of defeat. It finished Corinthian 2 Lisnagarvey 2.

BANBRIDGE 3-5 WATERLOO DUCKS
Banbridge were in European action in Barcelona and their first game, Friday Oct 6, was a knockout round of 16 tie. A win sees a place in the quarter final on Sunday while a defeat sees a ranking match on Saturday morning the importance of which result may well benefit another team should that team be the EYHL Champions Trophy winners in the current season. ‘Well begun is half done’ is a well known adage in the English language. If that’s the case, then Banbridge certainly got their EHL campaign off to a very good start, against Belgium’s Waterloo Ducks, through Louis Rowe converting a 3rd minute penalty corner. Waterloo Ducks got back on level terms through a Victor Charlet penalty corner on 13 minutes to leave the sides level at the end of the first quarter 1-1. Banbridge did ease their way into a position of dominance in quarter two which they made count in the 29th minute through a Johnny McKee goal from open play to leave the Irish EYHL champions leading 2-1 at half time. Waterloo Ducks got back on level terms in the 37th minute through a goal by Blaise Rogeau. The game changed in one sixty second spell about two minutes after that. Louis Depelsenaire gave the Belgians the lead in the 39th minute and then within a minute captain Victor Charlet converted his second penalty corner of the match to leave the Ducks leading 4-2 coming towards the end of quarter three. It was 4-2 at the end of quarter three but Banbridge staged a mini comeback in the fourth and final quarter when Louis Rowe converted his second penalty corner of the match, reducing the lead to make it 4-3 to Waterloo Ducks. But the tie was put beyond reach by Waterloo Ducks when Louis Depelsenaire got his second goal of the game from open play in the 59th minute to leave Waterloo Ducks 5-3 ahead in the final minute

The way the draw in the EHL KO 16 is set up is if Banbridge won this game they were due to play the winners of the second game in the Round of 16. If they lost, their next game for ranking, would be against the losers of the second game. So either way the outcome of the game between English side Old Georgians and Mannheimer of Germany would be of great significance for the future involvement of Banbridge whatever that may be. That game for the record ended in a 5-1 win for Old Georgians. That result coupled with Banbridge’s result means that Bann went on to play Mannheimer in the EHL ranking match on Saturday morning. Oct 7.

EHL RANKING PLACE MATCH

BANBRIDGE 2-7 MANNHEIMER
The first ranking match of the EHL saw the losers of KO16 tie one, Banbridge the Irish EYHL and Champions Trophy winners take on Mannheimer of Germany who lost the second KO16 against Old Georgians on the opening day. The Germans were clearly stung by this experience and wanted to vent their fury on their next opponents. Rudolf Hartkopf gave the Germans the lead from open play in the 9th minute. Johnny McKee equalised for Banbridge in the 18th minute again from open play. Gonzalo Peillat restored the Germans lead with a converted penalty corner in the 21st minute and increased their lead with his second converted penalty corner of the game on 32 minutes to leave Mannheim leading 3-1. And the score remained 3-1 right up to the end of quarter three. In quarter four the floodgates opened. Peter Brown’s 47th minute goal from open play to make it 2-3 launched a torrent of goalscoring which saw their opponents add four more to their tally. Luis Holste opened his account with 51st minute goal from open play to make it 4-2 and Gonzalo Peillat completed his hat-trick in the 56th minute with another converted penalty corner to leave Mannheim leading 5-2. Luis Holste got his second of the game in the 57th minute to leave Mannheim leading 6-2 in the final minute. During that final minute Banbridge conceded a penalty stroke. Tim Seagon duly converted the stroke for Mannheim to seal a 7-2 victory. As some of the KO 16 matches still had to be played when this game was over not to mention KO8 and other ranking matches the final place that Banbridge secured in this competition may not become clear till the end of play in the tournament on Sunday.

EY Hockey League Men’s Round 4 and Women’s Round 3 Fixtures Saturday October 7 – Preview

EY HOCKEY LEAGUE MEN’S DIVISION 1

 

Banbridge’s fixture with Annadale was postponed due to Banbridge’s involvement in the EHL HL KO 16 round in Barcelona leaving their Ulster Rivals with a weekend off. Elsewhere, the other eight sides are all in action. Corinthian, currently in fourth place, host table topping, free scoring Lisnagarvey at St. Columba’s College in Whitechurch, south of Dublin. Eighth placed YMCA take on ninth placed UCD in Wesley College, both sides fresh from their first wins of the campaign. Third placed Three Rock Rovers take on bottom of the table Instonians, who are still searching for their first League point, in Grange Road while Glenanne in fifth, host Monkstown in sixth, at St. Andrew’s College in what is now a geographic derby since Glenanne’s relocation to the Booterstown venue.

Catholic Institute, in sixth place on the League table, take on this season’s table topping Railway Union at St. Columba’s College in the first game of the day. Eighth placed Corinthian who won the EYHL 2 last season take on EYHL Champions Trophy winners last season, Loreto, in joint first place with a 100% record this season, in a derby match in Whitechurch. The battle of the sky blues takes place at Belfield where fifth placed UCD take on ninth placed Monkstown. In yet another Dublin derby at Serpentine Avenue third placed Pembroke Wanderers take on seventh placed Old Alexandra.
And the late game is another derby this time in Belfast where bottom placed Pegasus host fourth placed Ulster Elks at the Queen’s University sportsground

Newly promoted UCD picked up their first League points of the new season by beating fellow newly promoted side Corinthian 4-3 at the National Stadium in Belfield. The visitors started strongly and exerted pressure early on in the first quarter. The first short corner fell to the Reds but they were unable to convert it into a shot on target and the students survived. Having conceded 11 goals in their first two matches, UCD were anxious to concede as few goals as possible and certainly not any in the opening stages. As the game wore on and UCD didn’t concede they created a few opportunities to score of their own. Growing into the game, UCD took the lead through a penalty corner converted by Alan Sothern. Adam Galbraith scored the second from a field goal within two minutes and it was 2-0 UCD at the end of the first quarter.

Corinthian began the second quarter strongly and dominated possession in the early stages. It was pretty much nip and tuck for the remainder of the second quarter. It was still 2-0 at half-time. The third quarter saw Corinthian on the attack again in the early stages. UCD defended well. Corinthian got on the scoresheet through a Robbie Clarke converted penalty corner in the 41st minute to make the score 2-1 to UCD.  Corinthian were awarded a penalty stroke in the 45th minute, which was converted by Davy Howard and Corinthian equalised to leave the score 2-2. UCD were awarded a penalty corner in the 50th minute and Mark Colins put it in at the far post, after the ball rebounded off the goal post to leave UCD leading 3-2. Josh Filgas from open play increased the UCD lead in the 68th minute and UCD were leading 4-2 going into the final seconds when Corinthian were awarded a penalty corner. Davy Howard converted his second of the game. And it was the last action of the match which finished UCD 4 Corinthians 3.

Three Rock Rovers took on Glenanne at Grange Road and ran out winners by three goals to one. James Walker gave Three Rock Rovers the lead in the 22nd minute from open play. They led 1-0 at half-time. Glenanne equalized in the 37th minute from Shane O’Donoghue’s converted penalty corner. Three Rock regained the lead on the hour mark through Jody Hosking’s converted penalty corner. The points were secured in the 69th minute when Alistair Empey scored from open play to secure a 3-1 win.

 

Lisnagarvey visited Annadale and maintained their 100% record and made it 20 goals scored in three games with a 6-2 away win. Oliver Kidd converted a penalty corner to give them a 1-0 lead on 12 minutes. Matthew Aughey increased their lead on 15 minutes from open play to put them 2-0 ahead. Ben Nelson made it 3-0 in the 20th minute and added another to make it 4-0 in the 23rd minute. Daniel Nelson made it 5-0 in the 25th minute and Annadale finally got on the scoresheet on the half hour through David Tremlett to leave them trailing 1-5 at half time. Spencer Pinion got a second goal for Annadale from a converted penalty corner in the 58th minute to make it 5-2 to Lisnagarvey but any hopes of a comeback were snuffed out completely when James Lorimer got the final goal of the game for Garvey in the 65th minute from another penalty corner to seal the 6-2 win.

The next match took place at Rathdown School where Monkstown hosted YMCA in the second part of an EHYL double header.  A tightly contested first half produced no goals and it was 0-0 at half time. Things got a bit livelier after the break. Harry McCarthy gave YMCA the lead in the 37th minute from open play and Grant Glutz made it 2-0 to the visitors from a penalty corner in the 51st minute. Mark Gibbons got a goal back for Monkstown in the 67th minute but it was too little, too late as YMCA ended up winning 2-1.

The late match took place at Lagan College where Instonians hosted Banbridge.  The first half was scoreless and then Matthew McKee put the visitors 1-0 ahead in the 40th minute. Instonians responded through Thomas Orr with a goal from open play in the 43rd minute. Bann restored their lead in the 46th minute through Johnny McKee. But Mark Eames got Instonians back level in the 51st minute, Bann finally got the winner with three minutes left through Charlie Row with another goal from open play.

Loreto played Catholic Institute in Beaufort and in the first quarter there were no goals. It was identical in quarter two and it was still 0-0 at halftime. A third quarter couldn’t separate the teams but it all changed in sixty seconds in quarter four. Loreto were awarded a penalty stroke in the 57th minute which was converted by Hannah McLaughlin. Rachel Kelly added a second within a minute to seal a 2-0 victory.

In the reverse of their respective men’s team’s fixtures Corinthian hosted UCD at home in EYHL Women’s Division 1. Mikayla Power gave UCD the lead at St. Columba’s College against Corinthians scoring both her own and the team’s first of the season. The goal was enough to secure UCDs first win of the season as the gamed ended in a 1-0 win for the defending champions.

Old Alexandra collected their first League point of the season when holding Ulster Elks to a 1-1 draw at Alexandra College. Elks took the lead in the 17th minute through Gabriella Scott. The lead lasted less than a minute as Aoife Taaffe grabbed an equaliser for Alex a minute later also from open play.

Railway Union indicated that they mean business this season with an emphatic 6-1 win over Pegasus. Ailish Long gave Railers the lead in the 3rd minute. Ireland international Zara Malseed got an equalizer for Pegasus a minute later. Railway Union regained their lead in the 11th minute through Niamh Carey’s converted penalty corner. Michelle Carey made it 3-1 from a converted penalty corner in the 18th minute and they lead 3-1 at half time. Railway increased their lead early in the third quarter through a Kate Dillon goal from open play on 36 minutes. Railway were awarded a penalty stroke in 48th minute which was converted by Orla Fox to make it 5-1 and the scoring was completed when Niamh Carey got her second of the game from yet another penalty corner in the 65th minute . It finished Railway Union 6 Pegasus 1 .

Monkstown took on Pembroke Wanderers in the late game at Rathdown School. Milla Fulton gave Pembroke Wanderers the lead and further goals from Sally Campbell and Orla Macken secured victory. Monkstown responded through a consolation goal from Jennifer Hamill.

EY Hockey League Men’s Round 3 and EYHL Women’s Round 2 Fixtures Saturday September 30 – Preview

ROUND 3 of the EY Hockey League Men’s Division 1 gets underway on Saturday September 30 when Instonians host Banbridge at Shawsbridge. Instonians who have yet to pick up a point thus far in the 2023-24 season, face a Banbridge side that had victory snatched from them last time out by a last gasp equalising goal from Glenanne. Glenanne themselves are on the road again this time for the much shorter trip to Grange Road in Rathfarnham where they take on Three Rock Rovers. Both sides have 4 points out of a possible 6 from their opening two rounds of games. UCD take on Corinthian at Belfield. Corinthian won the EYHL 2 last season and beat UCD in the final. Both sides also finished in the top three in the Leinster Division 1A last season. Corinthian have 4 points out of 6 from their opening two rounds of games. UCD have zero points so far in their opening games but also have shipped 11 goals during those two fixtures and will need to shore up their defense immediately if they are to achieve anything in the League this season. Although they scored 4 times last week against Lisnagarvey they managed to lose the game 8-4. Annadale play Lisnagarvey and the latter have scored 15 goals in their first two outings and are currently on top of the table, two points clear of all the others and the only remaining side with a 100% record. Annadale got their first points last weekend with a 4-1 win over Instonians. Monkstown take on YMCA in the late game at Rathdown School. They have a win and a loss so far this season and will be looking to add to their points tally at home to a YMCA side still in search of their first point of the campaign.

ROUND 2 of the Women’s Division 1 gets underway on Saturday also, with Corinthian hosting EYHL Division 1 champions UCD. Last season’s EYHL2 winners were beaten by the 2022 Irish Senior Cup winners Catholic Institute in their opening game while UCD were held scoreless by the EYHL winners from 2021-22 Pembroke Wanderers last time out. Loreto take on Catholic Institute at Beaufort and having gotten off to a brilliant start to the campaign have lived up to the belief of many, that they are favorites for this year’s title with 9 current senior international squad members in their line-up. Insta themselves are fresh from a home win against Corinthian. Old Alexandra take on Ulster Elks, and last season’s Ulster Premier Division Champions and EYHL 2 runners up had a good 3-1 win in their opening match. Alex have 0 points so far following an opening day defeat to Railway Union. Union themselves host Pegasus and will be looking to add to that victory last week. Pegasus were thumped 4-0 at home by Loreto last week. Monkstown host Pembroke Wanderers looking for their first League points of the campaign. Having lost to newly promoted Ulster Elks last week they will be hoping to get a positive outcome against Pembroke who drew 0-0 away to UCD last weekend.
