Adam Charles Montgomery

Adam Charles Montgomery was President of the Irish Hockey Union from 1939-47.

Educated at Bangor Grammar School and The Royal Belfast Academical Institution, his first club was Bangor Victoria.  He later played for Queens University, Osborne and Cliftonville.  A Territorial before the 1914-18 war, he served for 3 years as a sergeant in the Black Watch.

On the resumption of hockey after the war, Montgomery was involved with Cliftonville and soon became it secretary, a position he held for 18 years. He served as Ulster Branch President 1930-31 and was an Ulster Senior Selector. For many years he was a regular umpire and in 1936 was the Irish Umpire in the England v Scotland game at Luton.

Owing to the war, the IHU suspended the rule limiting the presidency to one year and “Monty” remained in the role until the end of the 1946/47 season. A born organiser Montgomery played a large part in the successful internationals hosted in Ulster during his years.
