INSTONIANS – LISNAGRVEY POSTPONED

Things were originally due to  get underway on Friday night where there was an Ulster derby scheduled in Shawsbridge, Belfast as tenth placed Instonians, were due to host second placed Lisnagarvey. That game was supposed to take place on Friday but was postponed due to a frozen pitch.

CORINTHIANS 5 THREE ROCK ROVERS 4

A nine goal thriller in this top of the hill derby at St. Columba’s College where Corinthians had the edge over near neighbours Three Rock Rovers. This game produced two different hat-trick heroes one per team which we will get to shortly. Tristan Cooke opened the scoring for the hosts in the fifth minute. Davy Howard opened his account for Corinthians with the second goal of the game converting a penalty corner in the  thirteenth minute. Peter Caruth converted another penalty corner to leave Corinthians 3-0 ahead in the twentieth minute before Monkstown responded through Ryan Spencer from open play in the twenty-first minute.

Ben Johnson opened his account for Rovers with their second of the match from a converted penalty corner in the twenty-fourth minute to leave the lead down to one, Corinthians leading 3-2. An action packed first half was far from over however as in the twenty-ninth minute Corinthians were awarded the first of two penalty strokes of the day. Davy Howard converted to leave Corinthians 4-2 at half-time.

Ben Johnson got his second of the game for Rovers in the forty-fifth minute converting a penalty corner to leave the score Corinthians 4 Three Rock Rovers 3. Davy Howard completed his hat-trick for Corinthians when they were awarded their second penalty stroke of the game in the sixtieth minute which he scored 5-3 to Corinthians.  Ben Johnson completed his hat-trick for Three Rock Rovers in the sixty-eighth minute when he converted a penalty corner to leave the final score Corinthians 5 Three Rock Rovers 4.

UCD    2  MONKSTOWN   2

Monkstown took the lead early on through David Cole who scored from open play in the third minute. Monkstown looked comfortable early on and managed to hold on to this lead until half time.

UCD got back on terms through a goal by Samuel Walker from open play in the fortieth minute to bring UCD back to 1-1. UCD were back in the game as a contest and both teams came close to adding to their tallies without being able to apply the finishing touch.

UCD took the lead in the final minute when Josh Filgas scored from open play to leave the Students 2-1 in the final seconds of the game and then Monkstown were awarded a penalty corner in the dying seconds of the final  minute and then the final whistle blew meaning the penalty corner would be the final act of the game.

The visitors, who are the current league leaders as well as the defending champions took the lead in the second minute. Ross Henderson equalised for YMCA in the twenty-sixth  minute converting a penalty corner making it 1-1.

Banbridge restored their lead in the thirty-eighth minute with Josh Moffett converting a penalty corner to make the score YMCA 1 Banbridge 2.

A great solo run by Louis Rowe in the forty-eighth minute resulted in a field goal for Banbridge to increase their lead to 3-1.

Another penalty corner successfully converted by  Sam Farson in the fifty-fourth minute sealed victory for Banbridge on a 4-1 scoreline,

ANNADALE  2  GLENANNE 2

Annadale picked up a point when it looked like they were going to pick up nothing in this game against Glenanne played at Jordanstown. Far from being a passenger, Spencer Pinion was the driving force behind them securing a precious League point.

Pinion converted a penalty corner in the twenty-fourth minute to give Annadale the lead. Glenanne trailed by this single goal at the half time break. Glenanne drew level and surged into the lead with two goals in three minutes in the third quarter.

Brad Venter equalised for Glenanne with a goal from open play in the fortieth minute. Jason Rogan’s goal from open play put Glenanne 2-1 up in the forty-second minute.

Just when it looked like Glenanne were going to escape with an away win, that man Spencer Pinion converted a penalty corner in the fifty-ninth minute to secure a share of the spoils. It finished Annadale 2 Glenanne 2

Traditionally slow starting Monkstown drew first blood in this encounter at Park Avenue. A converted penalty by Suzy Kelly in the thirty fourth minute was enough to put the Town 1-0 ahead.

It was a lead they maintained until half -time. Railway Union responded with a goal from open play on forty-three minutes from former international Kate Dillon. 1-1 and there was to be no further scoring in the game for either side. Another two points dropped by Railway Union who have managed to collect only 1 out of a possible 6 points from their back to back home games this week.

UCD 3  CATHOLIC INSTITUTE 2

In a closely fought encounter at Belfield, UCD and Catholic Institute played out a scoreless first quarter. Insta took the lead against the run of play when Naomi Carroll scored from open play in the twentieth minute. It was a lead they held onto until half time. Sophie Kidd from open play scored for the fourth consecutive game in the thirty seventh minute to put UCD on level terms 1-1. In the forty third minute, Sarah McAuley, who has been pushed into midfield in recent week due to an injury crisis in that sector, scored her first of the game converting a penalty corner to put UCD  2-1 ahead.

UCD held onto the lead until well into the fourth quarter. In an explosive final couple of minutes, Catholic Institute looked to have done enough to secure a draw when Ciara Moloney scored in the sixty-ninth minute converting a penalty corner to make the score 2-2. But in the final minute, Sarah McAuley became game keeper turned poacher, by grabbing her second goal of the game with a goal from open play to put UCD 3-2 ahead. There was very little time left after she scored and the Students held out for only their third league win of the season. It finished UCD 3 Catholic Institute 2.

This game’s start time was put back by an hour following an early morning pitch inspection in order to give the pitch extra time to thaw out following an overnight frost.

Loreto got out of the blocks early scoring in the third minute through a goal from open play by Rachel Kelly. Siofra O’Brien added another from open play in the fifth minute to leave Loreto leading 2-0. Robyn Hetherington responded for Old Alexandra in the eighth minute with her goal from open play to leave the score Old Alex 1 Loreto 2.  And  Old Alexandra had restored parity by the twenty eighth minute when Bethany Russ scored again from open play to level at 2-2.  Loreto went back in front just before the break when Caitlin Sherin converted a penalty corner in the thirty-third minute. Half time score Old Alex 2 Loreto 3. Loreto sealed the win with the only goal of the second half. Christina Hamill’s goal from open play in the fifty-first minute leaving the final score Old Alex 2 Loreto 4. Loreto maintain their 100% record widening the gap at the top of the table.

PEMBROKE WANDERERS   2  ULSTER ELKS  0

Two first half goals for the hosts were enough to secure all the points at Serpentine Avenue where Pembroke Wanderers secured a 2-0 win over Ulster Elks. Aisling Naughton scored a goal from open play to give Pembroke the lead in the twenty-sixth minute.

Emily Beatty scored their second of the game from open play in the thirty-third minute and Wanderers led 2-0 at half-time. Despite their best efforts Elks were unable to breach the Wanderers defence in either quarter after the break and the game finished as it had ended after the second quarter. PEGASUS  1 CORINTHIANS  0

Fresh from their midweek win over Ulster Elks, Pegasus hosted bottom of the table Corinthians, confident that a win against the side yet to register a League point would close the gap on eighth for them.

And despite a very tight and closely fought encounter with only a single goal deciding matters their confidence was well founded. In the end it took a penalty stroke to decide matters. Ireland’s most capped international in any sport Shirley McCay made no mistake and secured a second win in four days for Pegasus. It finished Pegasus 1 Corinthians 0

U16 and U18 Boys Interprovincial Finals.

ULSTER U16 – 1

The two sides seemed evenly matched in the early stages and produced a tight and cagey first quarter and there were no goals.

Leinster went ahead with a first goal by their captain Alfie Le Quesne, who converted a penalty corner in the nineteenth minute.

Leinster were 1-0 up. But Ulster got on the scoresheet just before half time their captain Edward Irwin scoring from a penalty corner in the twenty seventh minute.

Leinster added to their tally in the fiftieth minute through Robert O’Brien whose goal from open play gave Leinster a restored lead of 2-1.

Leinster increased their lead when Captain Alfie LeQuesne got his second of the match from a penalty corner to put them 3-1 against Ulster in the fifty sixth minute.
Leinster put the game to bed in the final quarter when David Rankin scored from open play in the sixty fifth minute and made it 4-1.  Despite the scoreline Ulster’s goalkeeper, Benjamin Patterson was outstanding for the Ulster side between the posts. Leinster are the 2023 Interprovincial U16 Boys champions.

The final game in the Under 18 Boys interprovincial took place at Havelock Park, Banbridge when Ulster took on Leinster on Sunday afternoon.

Captain Tom Archbold led by example and scored the first goal of the game from open play on twenty three minutes. Leinster responded through a field goal from Kevin McKeown in the thirty seventh minute to level it at 1-1. Ulster restored their lead in the fiftieth minute with converted penalty corner from Ben Law 2-1.

Jack Geraghty got the Leinster men back on level terms with a converted penalty corner in the sixty-fifth minute. Ulster won the Under 18’s Interprovincial championship when Matthew McAreavey scored from open play to leave the final score Ulster 3 Leinster 2.

Railway Union suffered their second League defeat of the season and their first at home on Sunday afternoon as they lost 0-1 to Catholic Institute in their Round 9 EYHL Women’s Division tie. In a close contest played in a great spirit, chances were not that forthcoming in the first quarter, which ended scoreless. The only goal of the game happened in the twenty third minute when Ireland international Naomi Carroll converted her penalty corner and it proved to be the only goal of the game. Railers could find no way past former international goalkeeper Pamela Smithwick-Hearne and it proved a frustrating afternoon for the home side. For the visitors a very important three points. With the remaining matches in this round taking place on Wednesday and Thursday it could take till the end of the week to realise the impact this win may have on the standings. For Catholic Institute, following their win on Saturday against Pegasus, six points out of a possible six is a great return from these back to back games. Final score Railway Union 0 Catholic Institute 1 .
